With 2018 coming to a close, we at Underwater Audio wanted to take a moment to look at some of the big moments of the year, both for us and the swimming community. Of course, there are many candidates for this list, so we’ll have to stick to the highlights. Now without further ado, here is the Underwater Audio Retrospective with the highlights of 2018:
A New Website
After a lot of hard work by an amazing team, we were able to create and publish a brand-new and revitalized website. The new website was more visually appealing and much easier to navigate. With it active, we were able to launch many new products that we may have had difficulty with otherwise.
Swimbuds Kit for Apple Watch
During development of our waterproof Bluetooth-enabled products, we saw the waterproof qualities of the newer versions of the Apple Watch and wanted to provide a viable way for swimmers to listen to the music while they swam with their Apple Watch. Thus the Swimbuds Kit for Apple Watch was born - a pairing of a unique mounting design and a combination MP3 player and Bluetooth receiver.
The Delphin
Possibly our biggest undertaking yet - the Delphin waterproof streaming media player. The Delphin surpassed our initial goal on Kickstarter by 66% and raised over $145,000 on Indiegogo. Featuring a touchscreen display, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities, the Delphin continues to be a top seller on our website.
Swimbuds Freedom
Everyone asked when we would release a pair of wireless headphones and we finally released a pair last month called the Swimbuds Freedom. Our wireless headphones are already flying off the shelves and pairs nicely with a Delphin. Perfect for both running and swimming, the Swimbuds Freedom is designed with all athletes in mind.
A World Record swimmer
There have been some big happenings in the world-wide swimming community as well. Jaimie Monahan set the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to complete six separate 10 km (6.2 mile) marathon swims across six different continents. Jaimie, an International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame inductee, completed these swims in varying water temperatures and as per “Channel Swimming Association Rules,” she was prohibited from wearing warming gear such as a wetsuit. Jaimie is also the first person to have completed the Ice Seven Challenge which involves swimming a full mile in water temperatures under 5°C (41°F) at all six continents and in any one Polar location.
A World’s-first swim
Great Britain has been the location of many swimmers’ goals, the English Channel is famous and rather challenging swim. However, Ross Edgley took his goal to a whole other level. Edgley became the first person swim around the entire circumference of the island of Great Britain. This colossal 1,780-mile accomplishment took the swimmer 5 months to complete, swimming for six to twelve hours per day and spending the rest of the day in place on a support boat. He even documented his journey through streamed videos during his downtime between lengths of swimming.
Those were our picks for the highlights of 2018. Now we’d like to hear from you. What were some of your favorite moments of 2018? Feel free to leave a comment down below!
