The obesity rates in America are sky rocketing. It’s a serious problem. There are many health risks, not to mention inconveniences when it comes to obesity…
Not fitting comfortably in the standard sizes for airplane seats, having your body mass get in the way of your mobility, barriers to physical activities and general discomfort to name a few…
Then of course, there’s an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. So, how can swimming help to get your body from the obese category to the overweight category, and then to the healthy category…How can swimming help you reclaim your health? How do you lose weight swimming? Here’s how:
WATER DENSITY: THE SECRET INGREDIENT
Swimming is a really effective workout. More so than many other types of exercise.
And it’s all because of one special “ingredient,” or more accurately I guess, environmental factor. WATER DENSITY!
“Water is nearly 800 times denser than air…So in addition to blasting calories as you swim, you build lean muscle, which ignites your metabolism so that you burn more calories once you’ve showered and dried off.”
So, basically, the water density provided in the pool, lake or ocean makes your workout ump-teen times more effective! You get more bang for your buck.
BURN EXTRA CALORIES!!
The main way to lose weight is to either eat less calories or burn more calories. And the most effective way is to eat less AND burn more.
It sounds simple, but it can be hard to do if you are not used to keeping track of your caloric intake or monitoring your workouts.
Swimming makes this process easier because you are likely burning A LOT of calories..making those finite numbers less crucial to keep track of. You’ll likely loose weight if you are burning this many extra calories.
“Depending on your weight and exertion level you’ll burn between 90-550 extra calories in a half-hour session.”
For this reason, swimming is a perfect option for those looking to shed some pounds.
SWIMMING HELPS REDUCE RISK OF DISEASE
Probably the most scary part about the obesity incidence rates rising is the diseases that commonly follow obesity.
Diabetes. Stroke. Heart Disease. Cancer.
The chances of getting these scary diseases are much higher if you are already obese. That is why it’s so important to stay fit and eat nutritious foods. And why our doctors won’t shut up about how we should exercise. The scientific research is consistent with these recommendations.
“According to the American Heart Association, 30 to 60 minutes of swimming 4 to 6 days a week can help individuals both lose weight and reduce health risks such as stroke, diabetes and heart disease.”
So, if you swim regularly, you are already far less likely to acquire one of the aforementioned diseases. Let’s reclaim our health and start swimming at least 4 times a week! I plan to do just that. I am going to do a health challenge where I eat a very healthy diet and swim at least 4 times a week for the entire month of March! Watch out for the blogs on the Salad & Swim Challenge to root me on during this endeavor!
